Windows vista browsers cannot connect to internet

Check the Proxy settings for the browser. Since you can ping DNS addresses from the box you are getting resolution and your connection is fine. Your browser probably has a proxy set up accidentally, it is under the LAN settings in internet options on IE.

I could ping any web site and it appears I can download updates. I can also chat using Windows Messanger. I am not very PC saavy, but can follow detailed instructions, so please help, if you have any ideas to try!

I would have this system reghosted with XP if my husband would let me! I am not a fan of Vista since this occured! Joined Aug 3, Messages 1, First though would be your firewall or other security software that is blocking traffic. Try disabling them and see if you can surf then.

Joined Dec 11, Messages 1, Everything worked perfect then all of a sudden, I was no longer able to browse any websites.

Joined Apr 27, Messages What message do you get in IE8 when you're not able to browse? Is it "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"?

Open a command prompt and type "nslookup google. Does it ever say "DNS request timed out"? You could also try disabling IPv6 in Vista. I'd hate to see you give up on Vista so early. The error I get when I open a web page is Internet Explorer cannot display the web page.

In reply to Aashish G's post on September 2, The Vista machine connects to the Airport just fine, excellent signal strength. When I am in network settings, it shows a good connection between the computer and the Airport, but it shows the Airport is not connected to the modem. I know the Airport is working fine because I am sitting here replying to this on one of the two Macs on this network.

The internet was working for two days, and then it just stopped. In reply to Jesse and Roxy's post on September 12, One more update. I did everything recommended in this thread up, and realized the problem is not with the network. I connected directly to the modem, restarted the computer and modem, obviously no internet.

So I went into control panel, and the computer says it is connected to the internet. It won't let me diagnose anything if the computer thinks there is a connection. I don't want her to have to take it in somewhere to pay money and find out it is a simple setting that reconfigured when the computer crashed. I must say, I have a lot of respect for the people that work on and maintain windows machines everyday, these things are a pain to even figure out what is wrong, let alone fix a problem.

Networkingisapain in vista. So staicaly placing the ip add and dns servers seemed to do the trick. Your firmware upgrade might accept these protocols and avoid the issues with vista not accepting the dhcp packets request. You could leave it this way it will work just fine. But once i got online i then i found the firmware upgrade for my Linksys router downloaded it and then installed it and then went back to put all nics wireless and wired back to full DHCP and everything is running fine In reply to Networkingisapain in vista's post on November 6, My vista machine woke up one day from hibernation and decided it could no longer identify my wired network.

I've tried a number of other fixes, including modifying my registry, and they do not work. How can I get in to see the DNS servers I'm hooked up to a Motorola don't know exactly what model, I'm not home at the moment to look cable modem?

Will I have to borrow someone else's computer and hook it up to see this?
