They normally invest in Series B, C, or later funding rounds, through their growth equity funds rather than their buyout fund. Once a PE fund invests in a portfolio company, the company can be confident that there will be capital in place to drive strategic initiatives, like growing into new business areas, developing new product lines, thinking about application monitoring, modernization, cloud transformation, etc.
Over the years, we have worked with many sponsor-backed SaaS companies to help them partner with Microsoft. These have ranged from security and data privacy companies to CRM providers across all sectors and several geographies. How can Microsoft add value? Unlike Series B or C, earlier stage companies often have a product challenge. The dual partnership between the private equity firm and Microsoft enabled the fledgling company to access the liquid capital needed to invest in the technology that would allow them to grow. Microsoft supplied experts who knew exactly how to upscale a solution from single use to a managed cloud service that can be sold across industries. If the product is appropriate, meets a certain set of qualifications, is a certain size, is built on Azure or if it is built with Dynamics, Microsoft can help the innovators reach large enterprises.
