Game consoles traditionally output to TV screens, computers traditionally output to computer monitors. TV screens and computer monitors have very little in common.

Since this involves several completely different sets of standards, things can get complex. This series will attempt to reduce this complexity, provide some foundation material to better understand how your PS3 is talking to your TV or computer monitor, and how to adjust the display. Video terminology There are many terms and concepts that should be understood to get the best out of your PS3 display.

Interlace vs. Progressive scan NTSC vs. PAL vs.. S-Video vs. SCART vs. VGA connector vs. Component video vs. WXGA vs. SXGA vs. WUXGA video modes. Except for old style CRT televisions, progressive scan is usually the better choice.

On top of these basic video modes, several variations are possible when using the ps3videomode tool. The best variations for you depend on the monitor or television you use. We recommend that you find the basic video mode that works best for you, then try out the variations later. During installation When installing Yellow Dog Linux 5. This will force the Yellow Dog Linux 5. This will start Yellow Dog Linux 5. Minimum video mode for Yellow Dog Linux 5.

If you use a Composite connection, the graphical install is not supported. You will need to use the text based installer and then modify your post-install environment to support graphics. However, this is painful and not highly recommended as the resolution is too low for many applications to be useful.

But it is mentioned in here on how to do it. PS3 video connections. Introduction The PS3 is both a game console and a computer. This will explain the various types of video connections used by the PS3. It allows for the full range of video modes, as long as your monitor or TV supports them. You will need to consult the documentation for your display to find out which modes it will support. If you are buying a short cable, it does not matter if you buy an expensive one or a cheap one.

No sound is included in the DVI connection. Component video This is the third best connection. Common video modes seen here at Terra Soft Solutions are i, p, p and i. Note that this defaults to a YPbPr analogue signal with sync on green or maybe sync on luma , but can be switched to RGB. Component cables can be purchased from the The Store. These transcoders can be very expensive, but a cheap one used by one of our staff is the VDigi VD-Z3.

The YPbPr component signals are transcoded to RGB signals plus the sync signals are stripped out and supplied to the VGA connector as separate horizontal and vertical sync signals. Everything said above about the component connection applies to VGA connections as well.

Interlaced modes are typically not supported by most VGA monitors. See those sections for details. S-Video This is the second worst-case connection. S-Video does not support the minimum recommended resolutions for Yellow Dog Linux 5. Only the lowest of resolutions are supported: i or i.

Stereo audio is supported via the white and red plugs. Composite video This is the worst-case connection. Composite does not support the minimum recommended resolutions for Yellow Dog Linux 5. This is the only connection type that is supported by the cables that come with the PS3.

Selecting a PS3 video mode. Selecting a video mode The basic tool for testing video modes is ps3videomode. You need to be running in text mode when you use this, as the Linux graphics system is unable to respond properly to the way that the PS3 changes video modes. Using ps3videomode -help will show this help text: Version: 1. Note that the variations will change the actual video mode number used.

You can use this actual video mode directly, and you have to when you set the mode in kboot. The ps3videomode program will only change the resolution for the current display and is only usable in a text terminal as a way to gauge which modes will work well for your system. It will only affect the current virtual terminal, leaving the others scrambled.

It may be that you need to try any particular video mode using the GameOS first before it will work with Linux. This is still being investigated. It takes a basic numeric video resolution as used by ps3videomode, switching between the variations with a 20 second pause between them to give you a chance to see the results.

It also prints some colored text and a bar of stars so that you can check overscan and correct color mode. Underneath the bar of stars will be the video mode currently being shown. Once you have determined the best video mode, you will need to change the boot and graphical configurations to match. Configuring YDL 5. This will show you how to make your selected PS3 video mode permanent.

For example, the kboot. PS3 video tips and tricks. This includes various tips and tricks that could help you get the best display out of your PS3. The image will be shown via the VGA connection, but there will be an initial handshake via the DVI connection that lets the PS3 know which video modes the monitor really supports.

Often this will help make KBoot readable, even if it ends up being purple. Most of the video modes are wide screen resolutions. These may not display well on non wide screen. Sometimes the picture will be stretched vertically to get it to fit the screen. On LCD monitors this usually results in less than optimal displays. CRT based televisions are typically the only monitor type that can show interlaced modes well. If you end up with ugly, hard to read fonts, you may be suffering from this problem.

Best to stick with the progressive scan modes. The default overscan mode will restrict all output to the central part of the display, with black borders around all four edges. Fullscreen mode uses all of the display. The problem is that televisions often only show the central part, which makes overscan the better choice for those televisions. Computer monitors usually can handle fullscreen. A big problem is that the overscan region is not exact, some adjusting of your televisions horizontal and vertical controls will be needed to get the best result.

Advanced : the variations are set by the upper bits in the mode number that is actually sent to the graphics hardware, and there are some undocumented bits. Via the command line interface which you have just entered, download the Xautoconfig.

This is something which varies from person to person. While some prefer minimal WMs, others would rather have a full blown DE.

Installing applications The magic word to install any application in Gentoo is emerge. While this will install mplayer and all of its dependencies automatically, there are a few things which you should do before actually installing it. What it means is that it will show you the list of dependencies it will install when you install that specific application.

Go ahead, try emerge -p mplayer. It will show you a list of dependencies for mplayer. Similarly, emerge -p openoffice will show you the list of dependencies which it will install before installing OpenOffice itself.

One of the most useful switches for emerging applications on the PS3 is -G. Since these binaries are compiled by others running Gentoo on the PS3, you can be sure that they will run on the PS3. Since it is available, just remove the -p switch to install the mplayer binary.

Unfortunately, not all applications have pre-compiled binaries. For more emerge switches, just do man emerge in the command line, or here. What if you want to install KDE, since you prefer it above the minimalistic fluxbox. The process is just a couple of steps, and after a restart, you will be looking at your new KDE desktop. This will install the base of KDE 3. In Gentoo, KDE has been divided into small meta packages which allow you to keep KDE lean and mean without installing all the useless bloat.

These screws have a pin in the center of them that prevents an ordinary Torx screwdriver from working. These screwdrivers are widely available, just not quite as easy to come by as a normal Torx. Those three T8 security Torx screws seem to be the only non-Phillips head fasteners on the entire device.

This seems a little spiteful-- hardware hacking is a fine American tradition. No worries, we'll make sure it's easy for you to get these screwdrivers. If you haven't seen them already, check out our dozens of teardowns , ripping apart everything from a cappuccino machine to an iPhone 3GS. Interestingly enough, the rubber pad on the front-right corner of the PS3 has no screw hidden underneath it. Imagine our surprise when we removed it! This 12V, 1. Sony spared no expense. This is a brushless DC motor, which is fairly standard for fans in devices like this.

Brushless motors are quieter than more traditional fans, but require fine computer control to function. It is not a maglev fan like Apple is known to use, however.

The Bluetooth and WLAN antennas, intentionally three-dimensional in design, are attached to the lower case with Phillips screws. The AC inlet cable is devoid of a third 'ground' pin, surprising for a unit that draws nearly W. Removing the power supply. This is quite a bit smaller than the original PS3's power supply, and presumably has better thermal characteristics. Much to the relief of users worldwide, the power supply is designed for inputs ranging from V to V AC.

This is a startlingly compact unit. It will be interesting to see what the thermal dissipation is like. This is the largest fan we've come across in a consumer electronics device of this size. It is extremely stiff and presumably made of ABS plastic. This drive is still quite large, and takes up the bulk of the space inside the PS3. We disassembled the drive, and found that it appears to be a proprietary Sony-manufactured part.

The design aesthetic of this machine is quite a bit more bare-bones-functional than Apple's, but is still beautiful in its own way. Several components, including the AC power inlet, are simply held to the unit by the pressure of the screws connecting the top and bottom cases.

The two identical matte finished brackets in the first picture are designed to apply pressure to the center of the processors, keeping them firmly planted on their heat sinks. Power supply, main board, hard drive, EMI shield, heat sink, fan, Blu-ray drive, controller, and plastic case.

That's it for the disassembly, but we'll continue to post board photos and analysis as the information pours in. The logic board. Sony's going green on the inside, to reflect their commitment to the environment.
