The text begins with descriptions of soil origins and classification systems, including agricultural classification schemes, and then introduces classical concepts of soil strength and strength measurement techniques in the laboratory and in the field.

The subject of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering forms a part of the curriculum for the students of Civil Engineering.
